NATIONAL POLICE CADET CORPS
Junyuan Secondary School Inter-unit Non-Residential Camp 2017
An
integral part of the Non-Residential Camp included allocation of camp duties to
the incumbent Secondary three NCOs. Each NCO was assigned a role to help out in
the camp and ensure that the camp runs smoothly.
Duties
assigned to each NCO were aligned with responsibilities held by each NCO in
day-to-day administration of the Unit throughout the training.

The purpose of conducting a
non-residential camp is to build strong camaraderie between all Secondary 1
cadets. It is imperative for all cadets to build a strong and positive
rapport with one another so that they will be able to face the upcoming
challenges as part of their leadership development in the Unit.
When these cadets move on to become
NCOs in Secondary 3, it is important to work together as a team to ensure a
smooth-running administration of the unit. In turn, it hones each cadet to become
a leader, and thus will pave the way for future leaders.
This will hence corroborate an
important slogan of the Unit, ‘Friendships are forged, leaders are nurtured,
and dreams are created’.

DAY
ONE
|
||
Events
a.
Sec 1 Hike Trail at HortPark (selected Sec
3 cadets involved)
b.
Group time, ice-breaking games and outdoor
field cooking
c.
Sec 1 Air pistol course
In the morning of 16 November 2017,
the Sierra unit embarked on a hike to HortPark, accompanied by Teacher
Officer, Mr Low Kia Sin and selected NCOs. Prior to that, attendance was
taken and the NCOs concurred all cadets had brought the required items show
below for the hike.
a.
Water bottle
b.
Poncho (or an umbrella)
c.
Insect repellent
d.
Relevant medication (e.g. an inhaler for
asthmatic cadets)
Most of the cadets complied with the
instructions conveyed to them.
The cadets were briefed regarding
safety measures for the hike. They were advised to look out for one another
during the hike in order to promote camaraderie.
The secondary 3 NCOs organised the logistics such as
food rations and game equipment.
When the Secondary 1 cadets returned
from the hike, they were dispersed into three groups:
a.
Gryffindor
b.
Ravenclaw
c.
Hufflepuff
During the allocated group time, the
respective group leaders relayed the camp outcome to the cadets. Each group
presented a group cheer to the whole unit.
Following this the cadets prepared
their own lunch by outdoor field cooking.
They were guided by their respective
NCOs on the elements of field cooking.
Next, the cadets played ice-breaking
games. This was to ensure that the monotony of routine is broken as the
cadets enjoyed the games and learn more about the strengths and weaknesses of
each cadet.
Unfortunately, during the
ice-breaking games, a secondary one cadet sprained his ankle and sustained an
injury to his left ankle. Immediately, first aid was administered and he was
assisted to the café as the other cadets continued with their fun activities.
Safety was again reinforced to all
cadets after this mishap. It is important to inform the cadets to adopt the
‘safety first’ policy to prevent further incidents in the future.
Fortunately, there were no other
casualties.
When the ice-breaking time drew to a
close, the cadets set off to Yishun SAFRA for their Air Pistol Course. Upon
returning to school, they were again reminded with regard to safety, and the
activities that are going to be held on the next day. They were dismissed at
1835.

NCOs-in-charge of drills.
Prior
to the test, the NCOs honed the cadets’ skills in drills, which is an integral
part of every uniformed group. All cadets were advised to clear their doubts to
the commands given for the static drills and were immediately guided by the
NCOs facilitating the test.
Subsequently,
these cadets were given a short tea break. Next, they moved on to Campcraft,
where they were taught and tested on the eight basic knots.
